SPECIAL EVENT: A first-time event has been added to the North Burnett sporting calender with the Gayndah Sportsmen Lunch evolving from a small idea into a more significant event.
The Gayndah Jockey Club had organised a 150th Queensland Derby celebration for its members when the idea to involve the Gladiators RLFC came up Jockey club president Stuart Kirk said.
"It was past president Chris Seidner's idea to involve the Gladiators,” Kirk said.
So far the group has been able to secure renowned rugby league coach Wayne Bennett, retired and famed racing writer Bart Sinclair and Courier Mail sports reporter Bernie Pramberg as guest speakers, with more to possibly come.
"Which gives us a focus on footy and racing,” Kirk said.
"But who knows who we could get to speak to in the future.”
The guest speakers are volunteering their time to attend the event.
Kirk said the evolution of the idea from a small members event to the sportsmen's lunch wouldn't have been possible without the help of the sporting and wider community.
"The event is coming together nicely because I have the assistance of a very devoted and dedicated team,” Kirk said.
"It's always impressed me the strength of the Gayndah community, in the past years we have battled floods and droughts, disaster and bad luck seem to galvanise this community.
"And we come out the other side stronger.”
Kirk hopes to see this new event gain some attention and support.
"If this event is well supported we hope to make it an annual event,” Kirk said.
The Gayndah Sportsmen's Lunch will be on Wednesday, February 7 from noon, with a great line up of guest speakers for an inaugural event.
The full cost for the lunch will be $60 which will include a light lunch a complimentary drink upon arrival with full tables available for purchase.
